The stages of the sanding of timber floor boards First of all, before the sanding process takes place, it is good practice to let the floor "settle" for a period, which may be 3 to 14 days. This period is also beneficial for curing of adhesives where utilised. Rough (level/basic) sand using 40# belts on sanding machine. • First and second pass of sanding at 45° to board direction. • Third pass of sanding in the board direction. Medium and fine sand with 60# and 100# belts on sanding machine and the floor is sanded in the direction of the grain (board run). Final sand is carried out using a rotary sander, plate orbital sander or similar machine with a 100 - 150 grade paper or screenback. The sanding should be carried out in the direction of the grain ensuring a smooth action. For a water based coating system, the final sand may need to be carried out using a new or worn 150 mesh screenback depending on the waterborne system being used. The floor is then vacuumed thoroughly and tack rag cleaned if required. Dig out any dirt or dust and vacuum away as the applicator will most certainly pull the dirt onto the body of the floor. Heavy sanding machine may have the potential to create wheel marks on low density floor boards. Edited by user Friday, 13 November 2009 7:29:23 PM(UTC)
