This international, edited book summarises the advances in human mitochondrial genetics made over the past decade and a half. In order to make sense of the diversity of mitochondrial disease the reader is first treated to a review of mitochondrial DNA metabolism and normal mitochondrial function. The core of the book details specific mitochondrial and nuclear mutations and the diseases they cause, whilst at the same time providing further insight into mitochondrial function. Later sections assess the role of cellular and animal models in advancing our understanding of mitochondrial diseases and the prospects for novel therapeutic strategies to combat these enigmatic disorders. Mitochondrial diseases are an increasingly recognised cause of inherited disease, most clinicians are now aware of this group of diseases and those involved in genetic counselling will recognise the need for a greater understanding of this group of disorders.

In this volume, the product of decades of study and research, the world's foremost geneticist surveys the major developments in what is emerging as the most important single area of scientific inquiry in the twentieth century: biological theory of evolution in particular.

Noting that the theory of evolution in biology is more than a century old, Dr. Dobzhansky points out that it is nevertheless only in recent times that our knowledge of its physical basis as well as our understanding of its dynamics has progressed greatly. Yet, he notes, new problems have replaced the older ones at the forefront of scientific inquiry, problems which require entirely new approaches. It is to these manifold and exciting new questions that the author brings a lifetime of experience.

Throughout, his goal is to create not a summary of all the available literature, nor a professional book written only for the scientific community, but rather a presentation of basic ideas, accompanied by the indispensable references which would enable interested readers to pursue the matter further. The book has been purposely kept short to enable it to be read as a whole, and above all, it has been written in a manner which will hold the attention as well as inform both the general reader and the professionally concerned scientist.

'In the past decade there has been an explosion of research into the psychology of well-being. While we know that psychological well-being is partly heritable, it is only recently that researchers have started to investigate the specific genetic factors that influence well-being. Such research explores not only heritability, based on traditional twin study designs, but also includes studies combining some of the most recent molecular genetic techniques and methods. This landmark book summarizes the state of knowledge regarding heritability and molecular genetics in positive psychology. The first book of its kind, The Genetics of Psychological well-being is a major contribution to the positive psychology literature, and important for all those in the fields of positive psychology, psychiatric genetics, and well-being.

The role of genetics is becoming increasingly important in all aspects of healthcare and particularly in the field of cancer care. Genetics for Health Professionals in Cancer Care: From Principles to Practice equips health professionals with the knowledge and skills required for all aspects of managing cancer family history. This includes taking an accurate cancer family history and drawing a family tree; understanding cancer biology, basic cancer genetics and the genes involved in hereditary breast, ovarian, prostate, colorectal, gastric and related gynaecological cancers and rare cancer predisposing syndromes; assessing cancer risk and communicating risk information; early detection and risk reducing measures available for those at increased risk and managing individuals with hereditary cancer. Drawing on experiences of health professionals, Genetics for Health Professionals in Cancer Care discusses the challenges raised and provides practical advice and insight into what happens when a patient is referred for genetic counselling and genetic testing, including the psychological, social and ethical issues faced by individuals and families with and at risk of hereditary cancer. The book also provides practical guidance on setting up a cancer family history clinic in primary and secondary care.Genetics for Health Professionals in Cancer Care is essential reading for healthcare professionals working with cancer patients and their families, and is an ideal reference text for non-specialists working in cancer genetics.

This is the first book to explore the profound impact of genetics on literary fiction over the past 40 years. It shows that major writers, including the Nobel laureates Doris Lessing and Kazuo Ishiguro, were compelled and disturbed by the gene-centric and reductionist account of human nature promoted by figures like E.O. Wilson and Richard Dawkins and tracks the ways in which they wrestled with its implications for humanist beliefs about agency and identity. It goes on to argue that in contrast, the postgenomic view of organisms as agentic and interactive intersects productively with the humanist and posthumanist insights of contemporary fiction.
